Grubhub received a big boost after Amazon announced it’s giving a free year of the Grubhub+ to its nearly 150 million U.S. Prime members as a new perk, affording them access to free and unlimited deliveries starting immediately. This comes less than three months after Just Eat Takeaway.com put Grubhub up for sale after the Amsterdam-based company paid $7.3 billion for the third-largest U.S. delivery provider in 2021.

While nothing in the joint announcement explicitly suggests Amazon is eyeing up Grubhub’s deets, Amazon is always part of the conversation when an opportunity arises to grab a significant slice of the U.S. meal delivery scene.

Grubhub+ normally costs $9.99 per month, and Amazon said the partnership will bring more convenience to Prime members who are new to Grubhub, while adding more value to Prime membership ahead of its annual two-day Prime Day sale.

To activate the new deal, Prime members in the U.S. need to sign up for Grubhub+ to access $0 delivery fees from the hundreds of thousands of restaurants, grocery delivery and other products on the Grubhub platform.

“Both Grubhub and Amazon have transformed people’s lives by providing them with unprecedented choice and convenience,” said Ariella Kurshan, senior vice president of growth at Grubhub. “With the new Grubhub and Amazon offering, Prime members now can enjoy free delivery from hundreds of thousands of restaurants across the country, when they sign up for a year of free Grubhub+. I’m thrilled that new Grubhub diners from Amazon can get even more delivered to their door with their Prime membership.”

“Being able to give Prime members one year of Grubhub+ and no delivery fees from restaurants is our way of saying ‘thank you’,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president, Amazon Prime. “The value of a Prime membership continues to grow with this offer, and this year is shaping up to be a great time to enjoy the convenience, savings, fun—and deliciousness—that membership provides.”

In addition to $0 delivery on eligible orders, Grubhub+ members get access to member-only perks and rewards. Members also enjoy a donation match on Grubhub+ orders through Grubhub’s Donate the Change program, which raised more than $25 million in 2021 alone, benefiting more than 20 charitable organizations.
